Gold filled has 100 times more gold than any plating as it has two sheets of solid karat gold bonded over a core of brass. For a piece of jewelry to be legally stamped with the “GF” marking the weight must be at least 1/20th gold. This explains why you may see a marking on gold filled articles “1/20 14k GF.” This means that 5% of the item is 14karat gold where as gold plated would only contain .05% or less of gold. Being that the surface layer of gold-filled jewelry is at least 100 time thicker than any plating, gold-filled pieces tend to last much longer and are considered to last a “lifetime” Gold Vermeil is when sterling silver is used as the interior metal, with at least 2microns of gold plating. The American standard gold filled should not have any sterling silver in it.
